Youth Development Programmes

"Young people need models, not critics" - John Wooden

We run various programmes for young people ages 8-18. All of our programmes focus on building connections between youth and mentors, and providing opportunity for youth development.

Early Intervention

The Straight Up Trust facilitates a number of early intervention initiatives within the Southern Dunedin area.

  • Life skills and leadership development programmes in Schools (intermediate school focus)
  • Youth Workers in Schools (intermediate school focus)

Little Rockies

Little Rockies is an afterschool program for Carisbrook School students in years 4, 5 & 6. This program is led by youth workers as well as senior students who take part in a leadership development program.

We share afternoon tea together-which we have found to be a powerful time of connection and sharing stories grows the sense of belonging to the Rock Solid community. The senior students run games that focus on team building, fun, communication and celebration, this is then followed by a short values based talk which reinforce being part of a positive community.

When: Fridays during the school term, 3.00pm – 4.30pm
Where: Carisbrook School Hall
Cost: $2

Rock Solid Intermediate

Intermediate Club is a vibrant and fun community, open to any young person in the southern Dunedn area in year 7 or 8 at school. With around 50 youth attending each week and 20 volunteer mentors, the high mentor:youth ration means there is a huge focus on connection, mentoring and fun.

We have dinner together around the table sharing stories and making connections. This is followed by an evening of big group team building activities or activities in small groups around Dunedin as well as a short values base talk relevant to the nights activities.
